“The rigours of racing unsupported and testing ourselves against these elements are what drives us two determined Kiwis.”
We were inspired to enter the Yukon 1000, by the adventurous spirit of miner Edward Jessen, who bought a modern chain bicycle in 1900 and biked from Klondike to Nome in a -40degC winter, to become a gold prospector.
One hundred and twenty five years later, we feel privileged to compete in the world’s premier, long distance paddle race, with the same zest for a challenge as Edward … but equipped with way better gear!
The Yukon 1000 involves travel, teamwork, endurance, a hefty dose of training and a harsh environment. Gordon and I expect to encounter challenges ranging from wildlife to rapids and wildfires to mosquitos. The rigours of racing unsupported and testing ourselves against these elements are what drives us two determined Kiwis.
